Stage 6 - Transformation

Transforming individuals and groups towards a more sustainable and responsible behaviour, through providing a sustainable learning environment that supports the transformation.
Transformation

Before starting this stage you can ask yourself some questions:

  • What has changed (individually, within courses, within the organization)?
  • How can we measure the change?
  • How can we show the change to inspire others (without greenwashing)?

The whole process fosters a transformation to a more sustainable and responsible behaviour by individuals and groups. However, if we live what we learn the process will also lead to a transformation of the whole educational organisation with an holistic whole institution approach.

Inspiring examples that have been explored within the project are:

  • Certifications that help education providers to become more sustainable like the STOKED certification of Surf Club Viana https://www.stokecertified.com/members/surf-clube-de-viana/
  • Federations’ initiatives to get climate neutral like the strategy of the German Alpine Club - a strategy to become climate neutral by 2030 but with the main goal of reducing the emissions as much as possible on all levels before starting the compensation

Reflection

The ability to reflect critically is the core of sustainable thinking and action. It helps us to question our own ideas and ways of thinking, to deal with difficult decisions, to take other perspectives and to think forward. To reflect on our values, learnings and experiences and sharing emotions that we experience during practicing outdoor sport and taking part in education courses can be seen as central stepping stone of the transformation process.

Transformation

Outcomes:

  • Educators or instructors have developed ideas and set up criteria to measure the transformation over the long term e.g. carbon emissions, number of courses without cars, km without flying/with bike, etc.
  • Participants have evaluated / expressed / reflected on what has changed for them individually, within courses , within the organisation
